Happy new year! What? It’s not January? I know, but the season of Advent is the start of the Christian calendar. We begin the year listening to God’s promises revealed through Jesus: the promise of a new heaven and new earth, promises of rebirth, promises of a new hope for all humanity. Unfortunately, some people like Tim LeHaye and Jerry Jenkins and their now famous Left Behind series, that takes some serious poetic license [...] 
I just wrapped up a series of testimonies during worship from some members of the church I serve around why church matters to them. Each shared their faith journey and how they landed here and where they are in their walk with God. Each was then asked to sum it all up: Why does church matter? The responses varied, but a common thread was heard: church matters because it is where we are [...] I did an experiment this past Sunday. I shared in the sermon the idea of seizing each moment by trying to be intentional about paying to what God might be doing in that moment. It’s a delicate balance of seeing the past, learning from it, but not getting stuck in it, and looking to the future, have dreams, but not get consumed or overwhelmed by them. I asked the ushers to pass out quarter [...] The last several General Assemblies of the PC(USA) have been called “apostate” and faithless because of some of their decisions, mostly relating to the ordination and recognition of homosexual people (LGBT). These words were thrown hard and received painfully by many on all sides of these issues. They were labeled as gutless by some who sought tougher statements about what is happening in Israel/Palestine. More often than not these epithets are often thrust by [...] We are a little more than a week away from the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)., our biennial gathering of teaching and ruling elders to discern, discuss, and debate the will of God for our Church (go to PCBiz to see what’s on the agenda). Among the issues to be discussed: broadening our understanding of who can get married, divesting from companies who’s products are being [...] The audio recording didn’t work today, so I’m posting my sermon text for today, Palm Sunday, here. The sermon was based on Mark 11.1-11, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Unfortunately, I do have a tendency to “off manuscript”, so I’m afraid those remarks are lost. But this gives you the gist: Can you imagine the scene…Jesus is about a mile outside of Jerusalem. For several years he has been wandering the Galilean countryside about 70 miles [...] |
