Thanks for stopping in. Pour yourself a cup o' jo, take a load off your feet, and check out what's here. You are looking at my ramblings about issues of faith, life and culture—they are my own and are not necessarily shared by those with whom I work, live or otherwise engage. My journey has led my family and me across the country where I have been introduced to a lot of people and a lot of different ways of doing things. One passion, though, runs through all these experiences: building beloved and sustainable community. "Sustainable" community is kind of a strange notion, as communities (people) change constantly, and things are always in motion. So, the latest chapter of my life has led me to the notion of "impermanence"—not an idea that comes naturally in a culture that likes to build monuments to our greatness for future generations to view and admire. But, I'm trying to practice my awareness of impermanence—the idea that nothing is permanent, nothing is forever, and things are always in flux. Feel free to share your comments and engage in any conversation that may be happening here, but just know that I do reserve the right to delete any spam or anything I deem inappropriate or offensive. I cannot say I’m happy about how this General Assembly has turned out. In fact, I can say I’m pretty frustrated by the inaction that resulted from polity games and the art of confusion. There are plenty of places on the blogosphere where you can read the details of the conversations and votes, as well as their ramifications. What concerns me most is the lack of vision expressed by this GA. This week many […] The last several General Assemblies of the PC(USA) have been called “apostate” and faithless because of some of their decisions, mostly relating to the ordination and recognition of homosexual people (LGBT). These words were thrown hard and received painfully by many on all sides of these issues. They were labeled as gutless by some who sought tougher statements about what is happening in Israel/Palestine. More often than not these epithets are often thrust by […] I have sat here in the aftermath of the resignation of Tara Spuhler McCabe as vice-mod of GA220, listening to our ecumenical partners try to help us remember our call to peace. I have moved beyond sad to anger. I am angry that a small and poisonous minority in our Church are able to cause so much divisiveness and bully their way to the center to effect such pain and suffering for our entire […] I am sitting in the plenary as commissioners gather to hear and discern further the work of the Church. The duly elected vice-moderator, the Rev. Tara Spuhler McCabe, has resigned her position in response to divisive vitriol and hate from some groups in our church (her words can be found here—an amazing statement of faithfulness in the face of the evil and hate-filled influences that are destroying the Body of Christ.
