Thanks for stopping in. Pour yourself a cup o' jo, take a load off your feet, and check out what's here. You are looking at my ramblings about issues of faith, life and culture—they are my own and are not necessarily shared by those with whom I work, live or otherwise engage.

My journey has led my family and me across the country where I have been introduced to a lot of people and a lot of different ways of doing things. One passion, though, runs through all these experiences: building beloved and sustainable community. "Sustainable" community is kind of a strange notion, as communities (people) change constantly, and things are always in motion. So, the latest chapter of my life has led me to the notion of "impermanence"—not an idea that comes naturally in a culture that likes to build monuments to our greatness for future generations to view and admire. But, I'm trying to practice my awareness of impermanence—the idea that nothing is permanent, nothing is forever, and things are always in flux.

VLOG-Season 1, Episode 5: Taking Care of Business

Stewardship is more than just “managing,” but learning to maintain and USE what we’ve been given for the good of humanity. Like we maintain our homes, we need to maintain our spiritual, physical, and mental health in order to have healthy relationships.

BlogPost: Eucharist As Catalyst for Social Justice

The heart of my studies has been pushing me deeper into a realization of the power of the Eucharist (the ritual with bread and wine) and eucharistic practices (figuratively and literally gathering diverse people around tables of fellowship and equality). In reading about Reformed, Roman Catholic, and other perspectives about the Eucharist, I am finding myself saddened by what has become a narrow discussion and understanding of what the Eucharist is and represents—I feel […]

Marriage Equality: One Step at a Time

This week the United States Supreme Court announced its 5-4 decision in United States v. Windsor that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed by Congress and signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, which blocked same-sex couples whose marriages were recognized by their home state from receiving benefits available to other married couples, is unconstitutional as it violates the equal protection clause of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. constitution. The tides […]

Death-Throes of a Denomination #pcusa

I read a lot—not as much as I want, but a lot. I love reading as much as I love being in conversation with people. The conversations I have been having lately seem to revolve around a few common threads:

our church is not what it used to be the world is not what it used to be I just want it to be like it used to be

But the reading I’ve been […]

Faithlessness at GA? #ga220

The last several General Assemblies of the PC(USA) have been called “apostate” and faithless because of some of their decisions, mostly relating to the ordination and recognition of homosexual people (LGBT). These words were thrown hard and received painfully by many on all sides of these issues. They were labeled as gutless by some who sought tougher statements about what is happening in Israel/Palestine. More often than not these epithets are often thrust by […]

The Church Lost Today!! #ga220

I am sitting in the plenary as commissioners gather to hear and discern further the work of the Church. The duly elected vice-moderator, the Rev. Tara Spuhler McCabe, has resigned her position in response to divisive vitriol and hate from some groups in our church (her words can be found here—an amazing statement of faithfulness in the face of the evil and hate-filled influences that are destroying the Body of Christ. Have […]

Listening Ears and Open Eyes

Tomorrow around this time I will be heading Sky Harbor Airport here in Phoenix on my way to Pittsburgh, PA, to join thousands of others to witness the coming together of the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). I have been reading up on all the news on pc-biz.org (the tool used for the last several GAs to do their business, saving I don’t know how […]

Identity Crisis in the PC(USA)

We are a little more than a week away from the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)., our biennial gathering of teaching and ruling elders to discern, discuss, and debate the will of God for our Church (go to PCBiz to see what’s on the agenda). Among the issues to be discussed: broadening our understanding of who can get married, divesting from companies who’s products are being […]
