Thanks for stopping in. Pour yourself a cup o' jo, take a load off your feet, and check out what's here. You are looking at my ramblings about issues of faith, life and culture—they are my own and are not necessarily shared by those with whom I work, live or otherwise engage.

My journey has led my family and me across the country where I have been introduced to a lot of people and a lot of different ways of doing things. One passion, though, runs through all these experiences: building beloved and sustainable community. "Sustainable" community is kind of a strange notion, as communities (people) change constantly, and things are always in motion. So, the latest chapter of my life has led me to the notion of "impermanence"—not an idea that comes naturally in a culture that likes to build monuments to our greatness for future generations to view and admire. But, I'm trying to practice my awareness of impermanence—the idea that nothing is permanent, nothing is forever, and things are always in flux.

Lent 14 – Trust

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!       Praise your God, O Zion! 13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;       he blesses your children within you. 14 He grants peace within your borders;       he fills you with the finest of wheat. 15 He sends out his command to the earth;       his word runs swiftly. 16 He gives snow like wool;       he scatters frost like ashes. 17 He hurls down hail like crumbs —       who can […]

Lent 13 – Give ear to my words…

1 Praise the Lord!       How good it is to sing praises to our God;       for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting. 2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem;       he gathers the outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted,       and binds up their wounds. 4 He determines the number of the stars;       he gives to all of them their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;       his understanding is […]

Lent 7 – Give Ear to My Words!

1Give ear to my words, O Lord; give heed to my sighing. 2Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray. 3O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch. 4For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil will not sojourn with you. 5The boastful will not stand before your eyes; you hate […]

And the Sun shines through…

©2013 E. O. Ledermann, Chandler, Arizona.

An image as I was walking back to the office from ASU. I looked up, and there in the trees the warm, spring-like sun was shining through the budding trees, and I was reminded: even in the most challenging moments, God’s light shines through and reveals life anew. Just a thought for today.

Lent 6 – Thanks!

1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. ~Psalm 34.1-4 (NRSV)

A friend of mine has started […]

Lent 5 – Humility and Ego

73 Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. 74 Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice, because I have hoped in your word. 75 I know, O LORD, that your judgments are right, and that in faithfulness you have humbled me. 76 Let your steadfast love become my comfort according to your promise to your servant. 77 Let your mercy come to me, […]

Lenten Reflection – 1st Sunday

1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise […]

Lent 4 – And the Self-righteous Shall Inherit…

1Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust deliver me! 2For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy? ~Psalm 43.1-2 (NRSV)

I seek refuge in a God that is beyond my understanding, no matter how hard I try to understand and feel it […]
